The Beginning

A week from today I will embark on my Gambian adventure. It will be an early start with a day full of flying but by May 23rd I will have arrived in The Gambia alongside my auntie Sara, my two bags of luggage, and an eagerness to get started.

While there I will be volunteering with the Wonder Years Centre of Excellence Organization. I'll mainly be working in the school teaching English and the local clinic. As most of my friends leave to college I'll already be in the classroom but on the other side of the desk.Six months from now I hope to return not as a new person but a better version of myself.

My parents have always endowed in us the importance of helping others. They led by example, working will local charities such as Habitat for Humanity and the Quantuum House, coaching our soccer teams, volunteering at charitable golf events, helping our girls scout troops, and so much more. They have  taught me that it is not what you have that is important but what you do with what you are given. Now they have given me this amazing opportunity and I can only hope that I can take what they have taught me and apply it towards my experience in The Gambia. If I can make the smallest impact in someone's life for the better I will have reached my goal.

I plan to update this blog as often as I can but make no promises as I will be spending most of my time working and I am not sure how often I will have access to the internet. I have placed the link to the facebook page and website of the organization as well as the link to some websites that contain information about the Gambia. Please check them out!
    Hope to post again soon!
         Love always,
                  Niamh, Your Gambian Ginger
